Two days, all genres. All donations go to support the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement
Bandsintown is teaming up with Koreatown-based label Red Kloud Society to convene the Joy Ruckus Club (joyruckusclub.com), a streaming festival led by and celebrating young Asian American artists, their many perspectives, and their collective support of Black Lives Matter. The festival will stream on Bandsintown LIVE August 1 and 2, 2020, going from 7pm-3am ET/4pm-12am PT on Saturday August 1, and 5pm-1:30am ET/2pm-10:30pm PT on Sunday August 2.
The Joy Ruckus Club artists originate from all over North America and span genres from hip hop to experimental indie pop. That, says the festival organizers, was by design. “We selected artists from all major regions of America and Canada (and a few territories abroad), representing the diversity of the Asian American ethnic diaspora,” explains Red Kloud founder and festival organizer Kublai Kwon. “Joy Ruckus Club made an effort to find new young faces in the Asian American scene. This event will break new talent and push the culture forward. Joy Ruckus Club curated a lineup of specifically progressive-minded Asian American artists who wanted to perform in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.”
This show of solidarity and support, while showcasing the creativity and diversity of the community, resonates with Bandsintown’s vision for livestreaming as a medium that can connect fans with artists in new, intimate ways. “This event, with its mission, creativity, and ability to bring people together, is the kind of initiative we were hoping to encourage when we started Bandsintown LIVE, says Fabrice Sergent, Managing Partner of Bandsintown. “It’s connecting people around a significant cause, in a way that would have been challenging in real life. The potential of livestreaming is especially exciting for emerging artists who long to find common ground with kindred spirits and new listeners.”
Kwon agrees: “No one wants to be locked down, but with the rise of the feasibility of livestreaming events such as Joy Ruckus Club, the opportunity to include a wide geographic distribution of artists in one event has become possible in ways that a live event could not easily pull off,” he reflects. “So with livestreaming, Joy Ruckus Club can influence, with a minimum of expense, a unified Asian American culture across the entire North American continent, which would be very difficult and expensive to do with a live concert.”

Bandsintown LIVE is programming a special livestream edition of Fête de la Musique / Make Music Day on June 21. Soul & folk songwriter AYỌ, electronic hitmaker Kungs, and singer Kiddy Smile (catapulted to fame by The Gossip’s Beth Ditto) are among the artists performing at live.bandsintown.com in collaboration with What The France, the French music export official label. Nineteen Francophone artists from all genres--jazz, soul, pop, house, and hip hop--will livestream half-hour sets.
It’s a new, digital version of the music-for-all initiative that originated in France, held every year in squares and streets around the world at Midsummer. All donations will go to the artists participating, as well as to charities that support social justice, including the NAACP.
The initiative has gathered support from a variety of French cultural institutions, including the French Bureau Export’s “What the France”, Sacem, Ville de Paris, the French Embassy in the United States, TV5 Monde, The Federation of the French Alliances Francaises and the Alliance Francaise Foundation, the French Institute Alliance Française of NY, FIAF and The Alliance Française of Greenwich, CT.
“Fête de la Musique / Make Music Day focuses on bringing people together to celebrate music and artists, which is at the core of Bandsintown’s mission,” explains Managing Partner Fabrice Sergent. “We need initiatives that unite people, and support equality, diversity and love for one another, which is what music and Make Music Day are all about. This year, we were not ready to give that up, hence the decision to take the festivities online.“
Fête de la Musique began in France, but has taken root in communities across the world. On the summer solstice in 1982, musicians took to the streets of Paris to make music for the first Fête de la Musique. The event, often called Make Music Day, became a global tradition over the years, eventually spreading to 120 countries, where performers of a range of levels and styles turn public spaces into music venues. The democratic, joyful spirit of coming together to make or savor live music remains unstoppable, even amid unprecedented challenges to in-person live music performances.
“When Bandsintown and Sacem asked us to collaborate on this event, we instantly thought that it could be a unique opportunity for What the France to play to its core mission, which is to highlight France's musical diversity and creativity for an international audience,” explains Marc Thonon, CEO of France’s Le Bureau Export. “And we believe this line up matches perfectly, with a great range of French artists showing the world their talents.”
"Fête de la Musique is an important moment in the French cultural calendar. We’re glad to collaborate with Bandsintown today to make it accessible to all,” notes Gaëtan Bruel, Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy in the US. “While highlighting the diversity and vitality of the French musical scene, it also proves that our current times are fertile ground for digital innovation in the cultural world. This initiative gives people a great opportunity to unite around music and donate to social justice organizations, which sends a strong message of solidarity to audiences around the world."

Bandsintown LIVE celebrates artists and showcases talents all over the world, with more than 725,000 unique viewers having tuned into the free, intimate music programming on Bandsintown LIVE since its launch 3 weeks ago.
This Thursday, April 16, 14 boundary-pushing dance music producers and DJs celebrate the gender non-binary, queer, PoC, and female-identifying powerhouses of electronic music. net.werk, a play on the online-only but community-focused world artists are building for themselves amid the crisis, has been curated by DJ and producer Dani Deahl. Twitter is also streaming the event to expand its impact. All donations will go to MusiCares’ COVID relief fund to support music professionals and artists.
“We believe that intimacy of music live streaming is a new form of entertainment, but this unprecedented moment of opportunity has not helped all artists equally,” said Fabrice Sergent, Bandsintown’s Managing Partner. “Even in the virtual world,” net.werk artist UNiiQU3 tweeted recently, “y’all still book nothing but men.” Bandsintown and net.werk teamed up out of a desire to change this radically and immediately.
“We are in an online space where there’s the opportunity to make different choices, yet that hasn’t been happening,” Deahl explains. “So we decided to do something about it. Bandsintown was a natural choice for their ongoing effort to support artists. They immediately expressed support for our values and our vision. Having Twitter pledge support was unexpected and thrilling. It’s amazing to join forces with companies who are as excited as we are about creating space for underrepresented artists.”
Artists got on board, then worked together to make sure everyone had the gear and other tools they needed to participate. “The group effort is so indicative of how music folks have been coming together to help each other out in these times,” notes Deahl. “The whole thing came together in a week. We wanted to show a bang-up collection of artists that just *happened* to include women, artists of color, non-binary artists, queer artists, in other words, the artists who always put in a huge amount of work and emotional labor to get noticed. This day is a platform for them.”

Bandsintown, the leading live music discovery platform, is on a mission to help artists grow their career. Just in time for SXSW, Bandsintown is announcing a new round of six Big Break artists, five of whom will perform at an official SXSW showcase, along with Jay Wile, a 2019 program alum.

Once brought into the program, Bandsintown promotes them for a year, and provides mentoring, training, and industry-specific tools to help them take their careers to the next level.
Past Big Break artists include Peach Pit, Bones UK, Cautious Clay, and YUNGBLUD. Full program info here.
“Bandsintown connects 530,000 artists and 55m fans, all registered to the platform. We can spot who’s making serious headway in attracting audiences at a very early stage of their career, sometimes even before music streaming services, as artists now tour first,” explains Bandsintown Managing Partner Fabrice Sergent. “We call it ‘data-driven,’ but that really means fans are choosing these excellent artists by engaging with them.”
"Being one of the Big Break artists with Bandsintown has been really impactful to my career at an early stage,” says Jay Wile, who has continued to gain momentum thanks to the program. “To be able to build a relationship with their team and have support from them around my releases have helped me reach new audiences across the world.
